Make the Perfect Head Swap in Photoshop

[ad_1] Hi there this is the nation picks in perfect and today vegan learn how to perform a fun head swap in Photoshop right from the right placement to matching the color and the lighting we're gonna cover it all so without any further ado let's get started this video Is divided into sections so here go ahead and skip to any section that you like you can use these time stamps so here we are Photoshop and fur go ahead and download these sample images check the links in the description but it's really fun to do it with your own photos And post it on Facebook or Instagram and just to make your friends jealous before we begin let me give you a little theory that is very crucial for us to understand for two images to match in terms of head and body both the images have to fulfill three criterias what are Those number one the lighting conditions in both the images should be similar for example on the head image you have the light coming from this side on the body image you have the light coming from that side that's not much of a problem because you Can flip it right you can flip the image but if in the head image the light is coming from the top and if in the body image the light is coming from the side well that might be a problem the second criteria is for both the images the skintone should be similar Keep in mind that I said similar if it's the same awesome you don't have to do much but I don't expect it to be the same it can be similar but imagine if the head has a very bright skin which is not shiny enough but the body is very Dark and shiny then it gets very difficult for us to match both of them the third criteria is one of the most important criteria of all three and that is the angle the angle needs to be similar if not the same okay so if you have your head looking up just like that You not half the body bending down it's gonna be very difficult for us to match both of these images so three criterias number one lighting conditions number two skin tone and number three the angle all these three things must be similar so here we are back to photoshop And we have both the body and the head open as separate documents now the first thing that we have to look forward to is the placement and we have to do that right so let's just do the placement and to be able to do that let's make a Selection of his head it doesn't need to be perfect so I'm gonna use this tool called the quick selection tool and let's make a selection of his head all right looks pretty good let's select the ear as well all right that's all we need right now there's a couple of areas remaining and It's over the top so what are we gonna do we're gonna create a mosque so click on the mosque button now it's non-destructive we can get the hairs back get whatever we want but I'm gonna leave it at that you can just refine it later now we can drag this layer and Drop it over the body just like that now we can just drag it down just like this and we can make it bigger or smaller if we want to now what I would suggest you to do when you press ctrl or command D see the transformation controls they Show up all over because the image is not just this small it's not just the head there are other areas which are hidden by the mask so what I would suggest you to do is to convert this into a smart object by right clicking here and choosing convert to smart Object right there now it's just the head now when you press ctrl or command D it's just the head selected that makes it much more easy and whenever you want to make some adjustments all we have to do double click on the thumbnail it takes you to another document and inside Of that document you have everything if you want to get something back you just go back to the mask take the brush and just paint that area and why don't you get that area back okay so let's go back I don't want to make any changes here I'm just gonna close it don't save all right pretty good now ctrl or command T right there and just adjust it I think the head should be this big or let me make it a little bigger just like that first of all let's look over the Sighs I guess this size should be great now let's place the head above yes okay now when we place the head sometimes the head in the background might be bigger than the head you are placing here in those cases you might have to use tools like the clone stamp tool or the healing Brush tool to be able to fill those areas back so here what I'm gonna do I'm just gonna turn it off for a second create a new layer right here and maybe with the help of the clone stamp tool or in this case let's just try to use the Content-aware fill but you know what so I'm just gonna make a copy of the background layer to be able to use the content of air fill you need to have a copy the whole layer right there so let's make a selection of this area and then go to edit fill content-aware Make sure it's gone to the vert selected right there okay so it's pretty much better we have dug in a little deeper now we can simply use something like the clone stamp tool let's make it a little bigger so hold the alt or option take a sample and just just paint on these Areas now I'm gonna change the size a little larger and I'm gonna choose the soft round brush wanna just paint on these areas just get it inside like here as well make sure you sample from nearby areas so let's sample from here okay looks good now let's do the same Right here as well because these areas are gonna show up so I'm gonna sample from here we need to rotate this hold shift option and the arrow bracket keys on a windows shift hold and arrow bracket keys okay that's how you wrote it and once you hold that it rotates all Right so when you take a sample now see it's a little rotated alternatively you can go to windows clone source and rotate it from here as well okay so just paint where it lines up great now we can hold the alt or option and that was pretty good let's take a sample from Here and maybe let's make it a little smaller sample from here and then just paste it right there so it's good now let's reset that just click on that to reset the angle zoom in this is critical placement is very important we need to clear up space for the new head to be Able to place the new head we need to remove the old one make some space here I know this looks really sad but you gotta do what we gotta do all right let's clear this that should be enough now let's turn this on and see you see how better it Looks and there's a couple of areas that need to be corrected here the little in all right let's turn it back on and see all right it looks so much better now now let's place it right so we're gonna select it back select the head back you Can name it head and you can name it body manipulated okay select the head and then click on the mask button let's zoom out a little bit and simply take the brush make sure the foreground color is black you can press X to toggle between the foreground and the Background let's zoom out and you can just erase these areas at the bottom also you can take this opportunity to move the head not the body just a head select the head and move it accordingly I'm gonna keep it at that and move it a little bit to the right Just like that it looks better now come back to the mask take the brush right here and just paint with black make sure it's a soft brush you can also decrease the flow if you would like to so I'm going to decrease it to 23 and start Painting here just like that now we can also just keep it a little up and come back to the mosque take the brush all right it looks a little not that great because you know what you have lost the jaw so we have to create the Jaw and it has to be hard so let's do it with that of the brush and we can just always refine it later so we can just increase the flow and then let's get the jaw right okay you need to make it a little bigger select the layer control or command T Let's make it a little bigger alright better now let's zoom in quite a bit select the mask and erase the extra areas and we're gonna take care of the edges and all the other areas later but right now just erase the extra areas and the placement is right let's zoom out And see whether the placement is okay the placement is alright now we need to just work on the other aspects like matching the color and the lighting right but the edges don't look right no problem at all we can work on it so you can select the mask and we can simply Take the brush make the brush a little smaller and simply just paint out some of the areas like that make sure you have a soft rush you decrease the hardness all right there are just some areas that need to be addressed okay now what about the hair though no Problem at all we can take care of that later meanwhile what we can do here is we can simply just paint in from the outside a little bit I think this area is fine let's have a look here you could have removed all of it by contracting the selection but I wouldn't suggest That because some areas are fine and if you do that it just reduces and erases areas which it shouldn't in this case specifically if you erase extra and it looks good it's okay because at the end it doesn't matter whether you have a perfect selection but It doesn't matter that it does look good okay so but what about the hair no problem there as well so you could have made a perfect selection back in here if you just double-click on the thumbnail and if you just double click here it's gonna open up the properties or it's Gonna take in two selected masks if it doesn't take you to select and must select the mask and with the help of any selection tool go to selected mask and here you can try using the refine edge too and just to get the hair back oops I painted a little extra over there Paint only on the edges and the messy areas okay see we are getting all of the details of the hair back okay now we have got the details of the hair back but it doesn't look all very right so we can choose something like decontaminate colors and let's see what it does does It solve our problem well not really if we decrease the value of decontaminate colors does it solve our problem if we turn it off I think it's turned off better okay so we're gonna choose a layer mask and hit OK okay so now we have the hair selected Let's put it on a black background and let's see how that looks so if I choose a solid color adjustment layer put it under it it just doesn't look very right so if you want precise results you would create a brand new layer and with the Help of the clone stamp tool fill those areas in so let's select the clone center and then just sample the hair nearby by holding the alt or option take a sample and make sure the sample is current and below and start painting but it's taking it outside the selection no Problem at all so hold the alt or option click on the line between these two it creates a clipping mask now when you take a sample and paint here it just doesn't go out of the selection take a sample and paint take a sample and paint take a sample from here and paint Those areas are taken care of or about these let's just take care of them okay it looks alright now once you're done do not forget to delete this track and then go to file and then save but before that let's have a look at the hair something is missing so let's have A look at the mask first so hold the alt or option click on the mask there's a couple of areas remaining so take the brush make sure the foreground color is white you can choose the blend mode overlay that way it just won't paint outside so if I choose overlay make sure The color is white and then when I paint it just won't paint outside right it will paint on the areas which are brighter than 50% gray and make it brighter okay so let's just it just won't paint on black areas it will try to make the gray areas brighter But it just won't paint on black areas alright it looks okay let's zoom in here there's a couple of things for meaning alright it looks great now hold the alt or option click on the MUX mask now see it looks greater so file save once you hit that it will Update in this right so see it updated now the hair looks fine now the selection and everything looks great now let's zoom in here let's see whether something is missing so we're gonna go back to this mask and probably let's paint in black here now it's not painting in anything because the blend Mode is overlay do not forget to change it back to normal let's just get something out of the way okay there we go the placement is on point now it's time for us to match the luminosity or the brightness and how can we do that first of all let's take away All the colors because that can be distracting so we're gonna create a hue/saturation adjustment layer and you can use any technique to do this just take away the saturation make sure the hue/saturation adjustment layer is always at the top and we're gonna delete that later now under it let's create a Curves adjustment layer click on the adjustment layer icon and then choose curves now when we try to make the face darker in order to match with that of the body everything becomes darker right we want to limit this darkness to just the face how can we do that first of all Let's reset this just click on this button it creates a clipping mask now when you do that it just limits to the face all right let's reset it let's zoom in and let's try to match it now first off we will match the brightness as you can See the bright areas here are very bright so we can take the brightness high brightness up a little bit okay or we can add the brightness later the shine later let's match the other areas the mid-tones are just like that so we can use the hand too and we can just Click and drag in the mid-tones all right let's see whether the mid-tones look right or not let's zoom out and have a look pretty good not very much matching but it's okay all right what about the shadows certifying if we try to match the shadows a little bit it looks good Okay ish not bad now let's add one more curves adjustment layer to be able to add the shine let's add a curves adjustment layer and let's brighten it up just like this and this is for the shine let's decrease the brightness now I'll double click on the right hand side Of the layer and we want to limit it just to the super bright areas take the slider of the underlying layer from left to right okay as you can see it's being restricted to just the bright areas okay now hold the alt or option click on the Slider because it's very harsh we need to separate the slider to make it soft okay that looks so much more better okay I'm gonna hit okay and probably now you can play with it maybe you want to make it brighter or darker it's totally upon you now it's also affecting the body we Don't want that so hold the alt or option click on the line between these two or alternatively you can click on this it does the same thing now you've added the shine to that as well but still I feel there is something missing let's go back to that and play with the Darkness or brightness whatever you want to call it there is something which is really missing and I guess we can get back to the mask of the head and I guess this areas little dark so we can just make the brush a little bigger and then make sure the foreground color is black And try to erase that area and see whether that helps alright that helps a little bit actually alright but when we have done it from that side we have to do it from this side otherwise it's going to look strange make sure the brush is a little smaller Nope it's just all right okay now it's better than before now let's try to match the other aspects of the image first of all let's see whether the light is now okay or not I think the shine would be a little more how about trying to add more brightness Or going back to the last eyes dialogue box and then let's try to just do it again okay hit okay and let's see how this looks now I think that before was fine let's go a little before it it was mild and it was fine let's add one more Curves adjustment siren we have to keep doing it unless we are satisfied with that just click on the clipping mask button yep that's better just make the highlights a little brighter and the shadows a little darker but I guess at this point this is fine this works fine For us and we can go back to this and we can actually just make it a little more darker like that and let's add one more curves adjustments there I know we are just creating curves over curves let's decrease it just a little bit okay now As you can see the hair also becomes dark so we can go back to this one take the brush make sure the foreground color is black and just paint on the hair to get some of the hair color back if you want to have the original hair color Okay now all we need to do now is just turn off the hue/saturation now it's just gonna look really bad really really bad because we have not matched the color so let's delete the hue/saturation but we have done matching the brightness or the luminosity now it's time for us To match the color so create a hue/saturation adjustment layer but at this point you know what I think I think we have brightened this too much so we have to go to the mask open up the mask properties right here and then let's decrease the density just like this okay It works on top of all of these curves too much curves we can create a hue/saturation adjustment layer now at this point I think the red is kind of too much so we can easily select the reds or to be able to have the selection more accurate we can use the hand tool And click on it it's gonna select the red but you're going to increase the hue and the saturation all the way to the right and we will make sure all of the face is selected so we will expand at the range from the sides okay to cover more and more okay so the Range is now expanded let's bring these back to zero and make sure you click on this button create clipping mask button and now let's play with it let's just simply try to decrease the saturation and see whether that helps yeah that actually helped it did and maybe just Decrease the lightness that's helping as well so just play with these two and you'll be fine maybe we're gonna play with this a little bit a touch you can also scrub over the name you can also hold the option while you scrub over this it makes tiny adjustments Don't overthink it just do it alright this looks alright but it looks a little yellowish this looks better right so let's zoom out and have a look it looks better than before okay now do you think the color is matched at this point I would highly suggest that You take a break and get back to the image most of the times we make mistakes because we get too engrossed in editing the image that we lose our sense of sensing the colors and the lighting so take a break and then come back now when I look back at this I think I have to decrease the saturation even more just a touch also again when I look back at this I think it's too yellow so let's go back to hue/saturation and go back to Red's it's gonna switch to master but you got To go back to Red's and then you will play with the hues to make it a little more pinkish just take it a little to the left like that or let's go - - let's just dial it in here - two not two - two okay All right now let's zoom out and we can always adjust it later it's all adjustment layers it's time for us to do dodging and burning and it's the real thing it's gonna really make your image match with that of the body so let's create first of all a curves adjustment layer okay And let's create a dodging layer dodging is frightening okay let's take it all up just like that select the mask press ctrl or command I now we will click on this button called create clipping mask button and it creates a clipping mask then we gonna take the brush make sure The foreground color is white and at this point if you are using a mouse you can choose the soft round brush and you can make sure the flow is very low something like 5 or 10 and the opacity can be hundred if you want to however if You're using a tablet I would suggest using the soft round pressure opacity and flow brush this one you can easily create this brush if you don't have it by simply setting the flow and opacity to pen pressure so I'm gonna choose this brush make sure the foreground color is white and the Mask is selected flow can be 22 ish something like that and then just paint on the areas that need to be bright so this area need to be a little bright as you can see now when we do that as you can see the color is not matching very Much right the color in the shadows etc it's not matching what can we do let's go back to color matching so we're gonna create one layer put it between these okay it also has been created as a clipping mask if it doesn't you know what to do hold the alt or option click On the line between these two okay now in this we will simply take the brush and then make sure when the eyedropper tool is selected sample size is not point sample 11 by 11 average it creates 11 by 11 pixel box and takes the average color from that instead of sampling from Just one pixel which also can be a noise and you can sample a wrong color so 11 by 11 is fine and let's get back to the brush now and simply hold the alt or option take a sample from these areas from the dark areas probably just like This and then just paint on the dark areas here now you're thinking it's looking bad yes it is you just need to change the blend mode to color okay you can take a sample again from this area it's getting so much red you just wanted a little bit of it Yeah it works fine now so you can take samples from this skin and just get it over to this skin just take samples from here you can paint here and there to be able to match that with that of the body it helps matching yeah it's it's better it's Better the shadows look fine so have a look here's two before the shadows are not matching now the shadows are colored so now let's zoom out and have a look yeah it's a bits better but on the this side it's looking strange so I'm gonna take a sample from here and paint over Here okay great now let's get back to dodging select the must eat the brush foreground color white and we gonna brighten this area the left-hand side I think we did color it too much so we're gonna go back to this take the eraser right here and I raise it a Little bit from here I think he erased too much so we're gonna decrease the flow of the eraser and then erase it yep it's better now let's go back to this mosque take the brush foreground color white just keep on painting okay that looks fine Savva look here's The before here's the after now you have similar light on the head as well now as you can see on the right hand side house the right inside there's a little bit of darkness around the edge and we have the same here as well but we have it too Much so we can just brighten a little bit here and there yes it's looking so much more better now I would suggest that I go back to the color layer take the brush hold the alt or option take a sample of this color and paint it there because that area is very Dull it needs some color all right looks pretty much all right now let's get back to this one brighten these areas a little bit okay strain this off and see how was it the doubt the color let's turn this on I think this area didn't require any Gunner we're gonna take get back to the brush eraser sorry and we will erase get back to the spill area is this area a little bit let's get back to this thing it's a tough thing to do guys it's not easy now let's just brighten some other areas as well See what a difference it makes in matching these okay so now we have painted a couple areas now it's time for us to do a little bit of burning so we're gonna create a curves adjustment layer one more time and we're gonna take it down just like that and select the Mask press ctrl or command I now hold the alt or option click on the line between these two or click on this button they both do the same thing and simply take the brush again this time foreground color white again not this time every time because if you want to Reveal those and just darken some areas now the areas that we're darkening are lacking some magenta so I'm gonna go to green and decrease the green right there and select the mosque take it black and I think it's too much magenta over here all right it's great I'll have a look Here's the before here's the after now it's much more matching probably will have to add a little shadow there so you're gonna create one more curves adjustment layer and we don't have to create a clipping mask here so you're gonna just take it down like that press Ctrl or command I and then just zoom in quite a bit take the brush foreground color white and start painting over here and you can take this down actually drag it and take it down like that just below the head and above the body okay and now You can paint you can control how dark you're gonna make it this darkness is fine but zoom out and see yeah this is fine now you're gonna take the brush select the mask black foreground color and just erase the extras okay there we go let's zoom in Zoom out okay it looks pretty legible time for us to perform the last step and that is applying a global effect now this is something which I have all these advise to do in all of the compositing tutorials that is applying an effect to all the elements of the composite Equally with equal values preferentially as an adjustment layer at the top okay so we can apply a color lookup table so let's just go ahead and create a color lookup table or you can it can be a simple curves as well it can be anything but it should be applied to both okay Just like this and probably I'll add a hue/saturation adjustments there take down the saturation to make it look more dramatic and then add a color lookup table on top of it let's try the futuristic bleak let's see how that looks that is interesting as well I like That sometimes I try the foggy night that's also very interesting to play with so I can apply foggy night and let's just increase it just a little bit and then apply one more color lookup table and let's see how futuristic bleak looks in this case that looks interesting now we can decrease the Opacity if you want to now you can add one more got a lookup table you can just play with this thing and you can choose crisp warm wow that looks really great but think it's too much so I think we have added too much highlights over here So we can always get back to it I think it was this one so we can get back to this turn this off and see how that looks without the highlight turn this on maybe let's just decrease the opacity you can also decrease the opacity from here just dragging over the text All right it looks so much more better now at this point after you have done everything this is important and I've mentioned this before please take a break so what I'll do is I'll go ahead take a break and get back to the image make some adjustments and speed it up For you so there you go So that's the recipe to perform the perfect head swap in Photoshop all we need to keep in mind are the criterias for the head and the body image and both of these images have to fulfill three criterias what were those number one lighting condition needs to be similar Number two the skin tone needs to be similar if not the same and number three same goes for the angle the angle is one of the most crucial criterias that both the images need to follow and after that we first look after the placement then we match the brightness and how can we Do this first of all take away all the colors and you can use any technique to do this we created a hue/saturation adjustment layer took away all the saturation then using curves we matched the brightness after that we matched the color using hue saturation adjustment layer and then We did a little bit of dodging and burning we also managed to match the color by creating a layer and just painting on it and changing the blend mode to color and as always at the end in any composite apply a global effect it can be anything it can be a Combination of color look-up tables just a simple curse whatever you want just apply a global effect and then take a break and get back to the image that's the most important thing so that's pretty much it for this video hope this video helps you and if it did make
